Embed Encourage Empower – #DigitalCitizenship in My School

Today I will be in wonderful Byron Bay at the invitation of the Principal of Byron Bay High School, Peter King to present on the Digital Citizenship program that has been implemented at my school at a joint School Development Day with Mullumbimby High School. The day is off-site at Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation Centre, Lennox Head and is a beautiful venue for team-building and kicking off new ideas.

Pecha Kucha Finale – Part #5

This post is unbelievably behind schedule but explores the final part of the Pecha Kucha journey undertaken by my class. After four lessons of preparation, pondering and photographing – the day had arrived where my class would be presenting their Pecha Kucha presentations.

So we have arrived at PechaKucha day. Have my students actively engaged with this unit? Has the Pecha Kucha experience been beneficial? Have I provided an opportunity for the construction of deep knowledge and meaningful learning? Or, have I simply created another vehicle for angst about speeches, bullet points and PowerPoint?

Pecha Kucha Powers On – Part #4

This post is little behind schedule but later on today my class will be giving their PechaKucha presentations. Our final lesson of preparation began with a feeling of lethargy and blank looks.

So we went back to why are we doing this?

We needed to refocus, reflect and recharge.

Pecha Kucha Progression – Part #3

We have passed the halfway point with our Pecha Kucha project and the excitement is starting to build. Yesterday was Lesson #3 in the production process and the presentations are starting to take shape. All ideas are now in place and students are now striving to glean great graphics, devising direct discussion, snapping snazzy shots and investigating interesting infographics to use in their Pecha Kucha presentation.

Pecha Kucha Powers On – Part #2

During our second lesson today, the class really started to clarify their thoughts and ideas for their Pecha Kucha presentation. We did a quick recap of the concept and they began to collect the key ideas which they would focus upon. It was vital that they decided what parts of the Foundations of Physical Activity unit were most relevant and interesting to them if they are to successfully take this learning leap.

Pecha Kucha in PDHPE – Part #1

The Pecha Kucha concept is one which I have been keen to explore more and experiment with at school. So the opportunity has presented itself with a short theory unit in one of our elective classes. Year 9 Physical Activity and Sport Studies (PASS) will be spending their next three theory lessons (one per fortnight) developing a Pecha Kucha presentation about the areas of the topic, Foundations of Physical Activity, which interest them the most. They will present them to the class in our final lesson of the term.
